Why Work with Alfie Noakes

Alfie Noakes founded We Are Funny Project after more than 25 years across BBC journalism, television production and live comedy.

The first chapter was in media. As a BBC reporter, TV producer and documentary director, he spent over a decade working in environments where the room had to work: broadcast studios, location shoots, live productions where the energy was part of the output. He learned how attention is held, how energy is managed and how the setting shapes everything that happens inside it.

The second chapter was in live comedy. He produced around 1,800 shows, MC'd more than 1,000 and spent years observing, at close range, what separates a night that stays with people from one that doesn't. What creates a genuine shared moment. What makes a group of separate people feel like they were part of the same thing.

That combination of training expertise and live event experience is what makes Laugh & Learn Away Days distinct.

The workshop delivers real skill development in a venue that is built for it. The live comedy element creates the kind of shared experience that people carry back to the office on Monday.

This is not a generic away day in a quirky venue. It is a carefully designed experience from someone who has spent 25 years understanding what makes rooms come alive.

Why this format works

A unique setting changes the energy of the day

Most away days manage to be either useful or enjoyable. The best ones are both.

A live comedy venue creates an atmosphere that is more relaxed, more memorable and more energising than the usual meeting room. There is a stage, a mic, a sense of occasion and a little distance from everyday office mode.

That shift matters. People loosen up. They contribute more openly. The day feels different from the very start.

When a private comedy show is arranged for the full company, a professional photographer can be arranged to capture the day: individual portraits, team shots and the full-stage group photo that gives people something real to take home from it.

Infrequently asked questions

What was Charlotte Lee famous for collecting, to such a scale, that she became a world record holder?

Rubber ducks. Obvs.

How many lies has the average person told by age forty?

Somewhere between 87,000 and 146,000, depending on how honest you are being about it, which is its own problem.

The most cited research in this area comes from a 1996 study by psychologist Robert Feldman at the University of Massachusetts, which found that people tell an average of two to three lies per ten-minute conversation when talking to a stranger they want to impress.

A separate 2002 study by Feldman found that 60 percent of people lied at least once during a ten-minute conversation without being aware they were doing it, which raises the unsettling possibility that the figure is conservative.

Bella DePaulo's landmark lying research, conducted across two weeks with 147 participants, found that people tell approximately one to two lies per day in everyday social interaction. Taking the midpoint of 1.5 lies per day and applying it across forty years of conscious social life, beginning conservatively at age ten when social complexity begins to demand diplomatic creativity, gives us approximately 16,425 days of lying at 1.5 lies per day.

The total is 24,637 lies by age forty on the conservative daily estimate.

However DePaulo's research specifically excluded self-deception, white lies told so automatically they no longer register as lies, and the category her research team diplomatically called "lies of omission." Including those, researchers estimate the true figure is three to five times higher.

At five times the base rate the figure reaches approximately 123,000 by age forty.

The most common lie, across virtually every study conducted on this subject in every country where researchers have thought to ask, is "I'm fine."

It has been told approximately 23 times since you started reading this.

What is the technical term for the fear of long words?

Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia.

Clearly, whoever named it had a very specific sense of humour. At 36 letters, it is one of the longest words in common psychological usage. Sufferers are encouraged to seek help. They are perhaps less encouraged to google what their condition is called.

If boredom were a renewable energy source, which country would be the world's leading producer?

Based on available data, Finland.

The World Happiness Report consistently ranks Finland among the world's most content nations, which sounds contradictory until you understand that Finnish culture has a well-documented and somewhat celebrated relationship with silence, stillness and the absence of forced enthusiasm.

The Finns have a concept called "kalsarikänni," which translates approximately as drinking at home alone in your underwear with no intention of going out, and which is regarded not as a personal failing but as a reasonable Tuesday.

A 2019 study by researchers at the University of York found that the average person experiences boredom for approximately six hours per week. Finland's population of 5.5 million adults would therefore generate around 33 million hours of boredom weekly.

If each hour of human boredom could be converted at the same rate as a standard solar panel in peak sunlight, Finland's weekly boredom output would generate approximately 19.8 gigawatt-hours of electricity, enough to power Helsinki for four days.

The Finns, when informed of this calculation, would probably nod, say nothing and go back to what they were doing.
